Professor Anjum Jalal is the Executive Director and Head of Cardiac Surgery at Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology (FIC) in Faisalabad, Pakistan. He last assignment was as Head of Cardiac Surgery at  Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology (RIC) in Rawalpind.

He specializes in Coronary Artery Bypass, Valve Replacement and Repair, Aortic Surgery and Surgery for disorders of Grown Up Congenital Hearts (GUCH). He is specially acclaimed for complex surgical revascularization in diffuse coronary artery disease. He is well known to undertake challenging operations and receives such  patients from all parts of country.

Prof. Anjum Jalal enjoys a unique honor of playing a key role in starting the service of cardiac surgery in two new institutions in Pakistan namley CPE Institute of Cardiology (CPEIC) in Multan (2007) and Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology (RIC) in Rawlpindi (2013). In association with his senior colleague Prof Haider Zaman he initiated the service of cardiac surgery at CPEIC Multan from scratch. The unit became fully functional within one year and over next three years it started performing over 1000 open heart operations annualy. Over next six years the institute became one of the leading centers of cardiac surgery and cardiology in the country. Prof Anjum Jalal palyed a leading role in establishing a state-of-the-art suite of Five Modular Operation Theaters which was the largest of its kind in the whole country. This operation theater complex turned out to be the trend setter and many new institutes started adopting this new technology there after. Most of these institutes have heavily relied on the concept, design and technical specifications laid down by Prof. Anjum Jalal in Multan.

In April 2013, Prof. Anjum Jalal was given the task of developing and leading the cardiac surgery services in another newly established cardiac institute in Rawalpindi. As chief cardiac surgeon at RIC his responsibility was to lead a team of academic cardiac surgeons to develop and run a cutting edge service of cardiac surgery and to train young cardiac surgeons. His team consists of one Associate Professor and two Assistant Professors. At RIC he replicated his previous accomplishments with exceptional speed. His team of surgeons performed over 600 open heart operations in first nine months and in the second calender year (2014) the institute performed 1036 operations with less than 3% crude mortality rate. This performance in first two years has no parallel in the country uptill now.

One remarkable contribution of Prof Anjum Jalal to the field of cardiac surery is his initiative to develop a national  Database of Adult Cardiac Surgery under the umbrella of Pakistan Society of Cardiovascualr & Thoracic Surgeons (PSCVTS). An achievement which hitherto appeared impossible has  earned him a very special place in the echelon of cardiac surgeons in Pakistan and abroad. As a result of his efforts the Society is now capable of giving authentic National figures of heart surgery in Pakistan.

He has published more than 30 papers and has delivered over 100 lectures in academic meetings. His ability of reviewing medical research has been recognized by several international journals by keeping him on their panel of editorial reviewers including:

Since 2007 Prof. Anjum Jalal is persuing his ambitions to expand academic cardiac surgery in Pakistan and to promote modern concepts of evidence based medical practice. He is a highly respected surgical trainer. Both at CPE Institute of Cardiology, Multan (2007-20013) and Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology, Rawalpindi (2013-2015),  over a dozen young surgeons have completed their training at different levels under his supervision. Four surgeons completed their fellowships (FCPS) from the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Pakistan under his direct Supervision. His trainees have also passed international exams and all have proved their worth internationally. Many of them are working abraod for advanced level trainning in various novel areas of this specailty. His trainees are going to lead this specialty in Pakistan in the coming years as they are fully prepared to meet the future challenges.
